Abstract:
During this session, we will discuss a Spin Networking Event at Indiana University Southeast (IUS). At this event, 85 students from four different business classes (Management, Leadership, Analytics, and Accounting) had their normal classroom time reallocated to networking and engaging with professionals. 25 professionals, most of whom were IUS alumni, gave 2 hours of their time to facilitate conversations at their roundtables and engage in open networking. Each table had 3-4 students, and had a specific question as the table topic. Students and a professional talked for 15 minutes, at which time students moved to the next numbered table. There were 3 rounds of these roundtable conversations before professionals introduced themselves, with open networking after introductions. The 9/26/2019 Spin Networking Event was the first time for this event, but plans are to hold it annually. Lessons learned and areas for improvement will be discussed.

Full Session Details:
At this session, we will discuss some background information about Indiana University Southeast (IUS), so the attendees have some context to our institution. We will discuss what is currently happening in terms of networking between professionals and students, with a focus on the School of Business, as the Spin Networking Event was a School of Business event. We will provide information on the Speed Networking Event, that happens every Spring, and how the Spin Networking Event came to happen for the first time. After discussing this Spin Networking Event, we will provide an opportunity for session attendees to actually participate in a “Spin Networking Event”. This will involve discussing a real-world related topic (e.g., “What’s the best piece of advice you think current college students should know”, “What are you or is your company looking for in a new hire”) at a small table, before getting the chance for each person to introduce themselves and something unique (that you can’t find out on the internet facts page) about your company.
